Hi Doc, how’s it going? I wanted to ask you how much miniaturization throughout the scalp is considered normal? 10-20%? I’m male, 22 and I have been on propecia for the past 3 years. I had a miniaturization test 3 months ago and the doc said I have slight to moderate miniaturization at my hairline and crown. At my age, would my hairloss stabilize? I’m just hoping I have enough hair until the next hair treatment makes its way to the market, thanks.
I call any miniaturization under 20% as normal, because it may reflect vellus hair. What you see in one part of the head should be similar to other parts if it is not miniaturizing so that additional piece of information helps me as well.
Sir does xrays causes telogen effluvium, or accelerates hair fall in patients with male pattern baldness?
X-ray is a type of electromagnetic radiation that is all around us. It falls between the ultraviolet light and gamma rays in the spectrum of electromagnetic radiation. A certain amount of X-rays is all around us so your question depends on the amount of x-ray radiation one receives or the location of where the x-ray is being received.
I would guess that you would need a ridiculous amount of x-rays delivered to your scalp to start worrying about hair loss. At that point hair loss would probably be the last of your concerns as you are dying from radiation poisoning. (I’m being facetious.) Cancer patients receiving radiation to their brain can develop local hair loss (but that’s not x-rays).
A simple chest x-ray, CT scan, or airport security should be insignificant in terms of hair loss.
This is probably the first time I write, please follow up with your physicist.

It’s being touted as the latest anticancer wonder drug, it costs just pennies a pill and is probably in your medicine cabinet right now.
A growing body of research is showing that people who take a daily dose of aspirin may be lowering their risk of a variety of seemingly unrelated cancers, including colon, breast, esophagus and skin cancer.
Now a study published this month in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that women who took a daily dose of aspirin cut their risk of ovarian cancer by as much as 20 percent.
That study, combined with earlier research, is prompting patients and doctors to wonder if more people would benefit from taking a low dose of aspirin and possibly other nonsteroid anti-inflammatory drugs.

I have been suffering from an undiagnosed case of hairloss for almost two years now. The thinning occurs only in front of the ears in a circle around it and slightly on the nape. No thinning crown and my frontal hair line has been stable for years. No cases of hair loss in my family. The thinning started about two years ago and hasn’t really changed (for better or worse) since then.
I’ve been to FIVE different dermatologists and none could tell me ANYTHING. “Ive never seen that before”, “I can’t help you”, “It’s probably not what you think (male pattern baldness)”
The trichogram that was taken has showed no signs of male pattern baldness on other parts of the head. The results did not show anything suspicious. Tests for nutrient deficiency also didn’t show anything, but that’s been a long time ago so if you have any specific nutrients under suspicion let me know. I do not respond to Minoxidil. A two-times-daily treatment of nine months brought no growth whatsoever.

Matt and Al undergo uncomfortable prostate exams on ‘Today’ to help raise awareness of prostate cancer during men’s health month.
What some people on the Today show will do to promote good health — and ratings: Matt Lauer and Al Roker underwent prostate exams on live TV today.
Cue the urological jokes and the funny faces. Yuck, yuck, indeed. But it was all for a good cause and, let’s face it, celebrities undergoing medical procedures in public can grab the attention of the medically clueless.

A girl I know started losing hair and it turned out she had a zinc deficiency. She takes tablets for it now and says its slowed down her hair loss. She says that it’s a form of alopecia that she has.
Yes, and if you know that you have a Zinc deficiency, then Zinc supplements will work. This is very rare in an American Diet.
I am shocked that your doctor never explained the washing process to you. The recipient area requires daily washes to keep it free of crusts. I generally recommend the use of a sponge and supply my patient with a surgical sponge to fill with soapy water and press on the recipient area daily. By repeating this daily, all crusts can be washed off without any fear of losing grafts. If any crust are present, use a Q-tip and dip it into soapy water then roll it on the crusts. That will lift them off without dislodging them but never rub them, just roll the Q-tip on the recipient crust. I like to see no evidence of any crusting in the recipient area and the crusts from the donor area gone in 7-10 days with daily washing.
If you used finasteride for a year and it slowed or stopped your hair loss and then you stopped the drug, you would play ‘catch-up’ hair loss and could lose all of the hair you would have lost while you were on the drug.

On the day of my surgery I took an lozenge for my sore throat. Later I realized in horror it contained a NSAID (Flurbiprofen 8.75mg).
There was no excessive bleeding during or after the surgery. However I’m afraid that the NSAID caused just enough bleeding to dislodge many grafts and they popped out without any signs during the first hair wash 18 hours after the procedure.
I do not understand the basis of your “horror”. Please follow up with your doctor.
In general many patients take pain medication on the day or even during surgery. This includes NSAIDS. In general NDAIDS have a slight bleeding risk.
