Melancor

Hey Dr. Rassman;
Concerning the subject of graying hair…I have look at about everything the internet has to offer on what causes it, and how to stop it, even reverse it. I would like to hear your take on the subject if I may. Do you know anything about Melancor or is it another “snake oil”? And what’s up with gray chest hair?….mine is 3 times as long, seems twice as thick and curlier than my dark brown chest hair. Why is that so? What is taking place here?
Always thankful for you time!

I know very little about Melancor, but based upon your question, I did research it. The claims appear to me as marketing hype without documented scientific evidence to back up claims of safety or effectiveness that satisfy my scientific mind. That concerns me. The substance is in a pill form and that concerns me even more. I would doubt that this passes FDA or FCC standards and without safety studies, I would not want to risk my health taking an unproven medication.

With regard to your long chest hairs, I can only tell you that this is exactly what I see on my hairy chest. At least there are two observant people watching their chest hair grow far too long for their particular likes.

MEP-90 Laser and FDA Clearance

I know you guys know about the MEP-90 laser and its manufacturer MidwestRF, I was looking around on the internet and I found something rather interesting.I found a page that goes somewhat in depth about the methodology as to how the MEP-90 received its clearance.

Apparently the MEP-90 study wasn’t double blinded and the the only explanation that the report gave was this: “However, a sham/placebo study is not applicable to the long term required treatment of female androgenic alopecia because too many variations exist that would make it unfeasible to run a large number of experiments and it would constitute unethical treatment of the subjects.

Interesting considering that the Hairmax lasercomb recently recently received clearance for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia in females by use of a double blinded study. This report also stated that Midwest RF has been manufacturing hair lasers since 1999 but all records I could find indicate that the only thing they manufactured were MRI components. It’s also interesting to note that for some reason this company received stimulus funds why I have no idea. Here is a link to the report: here.

tell me what you or someone familiar with clinical trials thinks about it.

I generally do not trust clinical studies that are not double blinded, or have researchers with something to gain from the results. Most studies in the low level light area have failed to prove that there is a scientific result that is clearly positive.

I’m not a laser expert by any means, so I’ll defer to our readers that have more experience with this.

Poor Growth at 7 Months, Will PRP Help?

It seems that you are concerned about growth. At seven months, you still might expect to see more growth. I always tell my patients that at eight months you should see 80% of the growth to styling length. I doubt that this is going to happen, but you should wait another month or two. PRP will not make hair transplants grow. Only excellent surgery gets results. Depending on how many grafts you received, you might question this. If you don’t see an improvement in another two or three months, go back and have a conversation with your surgeon.

Avodart Info

A BaldingBlog reader named Greg originally posted this as a comment to a blog entry, but I’ve formatted it to make it easier to read and have reposted it here.

The FDA has found Avodart to be safe (for BHP). The side effects were very simliar if not a tad less then Proscar 5mg, which also was cleared by the FDA many years ago. I think Avodart should be indicated as a off label prescription in some instances.

  1. non-responders to Propecia
  2. When the loss of efficacy of Propecia becomes bothersome to a indivdual

One other interesting point is that the age group the FDA studied on Propecia (18-42) was quite younger than what Proscar/Avodart (50+ median age 66 approx) so the chances of sexual side effects will inherently be larger in this age demographic as opposed to Propecia… meaning the side effects are probably even closer then one thinks/ Propecia versus Avodart. The one draw back with Avodart is that there is no “human model” with type 1 suppression so there is a question on “long term” safety as with many drugs. As long as you dont have any side effects with Avodart, the long half life can only be beneficial with Androgentic Alopecia and the phase 2 studies show this. People held onto the hair they gained (even grew more) 12 weeks “after” the the medication was discontinued (0.5 mg/ 2.5 mg only). Proscar users saw a sharp decline in this time frame. I hope these facts are helpful in some way.

Thank you for your insight. I believe that what you said makes good sense. I would hope that I could adopt a similar view in an ethical/legal framework.

Microneedling: How do you do it?

I found this link on Reddit which is an excellent review of the entire microneedling process which I have been asked about often:

Balayam Yoga Will Cure Hair Loss? It’s Magic!

I have come to know that someone called SK has discovered a Yoga exercise called balayam is effective in curing baldness and hairloss. If you want to know more about balayam please log on to balayam.com

Controlling stress can help with balding that was caused by stress, but I would sincerely doubt any yoga technique is a “magical yet simple way to cure baldness” as that site states. Who doesn’t love a good magic trick? Sorry, but no yoga move will reverse genetic hair loss.

I just watched the video of this “magical” method and smiled when I saw that the baldness cure that everyone has been missing over the years was apparently the act of rubbing your fingers in a certain way. Well, at least the Balayam site isn’t charging people money for this stuff. See the video yourself at YouTube. And by the way… I’m only indulging this to leave you all with a smile for the weekend.

Microneedling with minoxidil and finasteride 4 months out (photos)

I do not doubt that this is the result primarily of using microneedling, supported by minoxidil and finasteride. Microneedling can bring out fantastic hair growth, in your case in just 4 months. The question, of course, is when and if to stop the microneedling. I suggest that it should be continued monthly, almost indefinitely, or the value you are seeing might disappear. These results are comparable to a hair transplant, but with hair transplants, you can just forget about supporting the results as they keep growing without drugs or microneedling. Congratulations, this result is outstanding.

I have this bald spot, what is it? (photo)

This appears like Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune disease of the scalp. To be sure you should see a dermatologist and get an appropriate biopsy and treatment.
