How much hair loss to see it?

Saw this online and how true is this? I get that many people are not as concerned with their hair like us in this sub and never track their hairline and density until they one day look in the mirror and realize they’ve lost a lot. What about guys who constantly monitor their hairline, take pics, compare to old photo’s, i.e really track everything regarding their hair. I for one do that and still have all of my hair (age 30).

Does that still mean I won’t notice it until I lost 30.000 hairs? As soon as I see any sign I’ll jump on finasteride so the “30.000 hairs “ theory only makes sense for people who literally never track their hair in my opinion.

Depending upon the size of the area, for most people with medium or coarse hair, they can lose 50% or more of their hair without seeing a difference. For people with fine hair, the visual effects of hair loss come on more quickly. One doctor in the 1980s, pulled out 50% of the hair on one side of the head on a man with black, medium weight hair and no hair loss. Why Does Low Estrogen Cause Hair Loss in Women?

If DHT causes hair loss, how come women whose estrogen levels drop lose hair? Seems contradictory.

I am not an expert in hormones, but things in medicine are not so binary. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is the cause of hair loss in men (not women) who are genetically predisposed to hair loss. You can have a high level of DHT and still have a full head of hair. Women lose hair in a different way than men. There are many causes of hair loss in women. Estrogen levels may play an important part in supporting hair and preventing hair loss in women and when women reach menopause and their estrogen levels drop, they may become victims of their genetics. It doesn’t correlate with DHT in most women.

Why is finasteride a must after a hair transplant?

If you have miniaturization on your scalp in the areas you are balding and then have a hair transplant, the miniaturized hairs get shocked out and often fall from the head. So we call this Shock Loss following a hair transplant. Finasteride can prevent this from happening.

How Visible Are FUE Scars if I Shave My Head?

Does having an FUE procedure to hairline and mid scalp make it artistically unpleasant to shave your entire head? I like to wear my head closely cropped, but I’m unsure if the punctate scars from FUE are extremely visible when you closely shave your head

There are many variables that produce different scars with follicular unit extraction (FUE). These variables include:

  1. The size of the punch used (ranges of punch sizes are from 0.8-1.5mm). The larger the punch used, the bigger the scar.
  2. The density of your donor hair dictate the visibility of these scars. Low density donor sites tend to show the punctate scars more than individuals who have high density.

What I am referring to here is shaving your head bald, not clipping it to a #1 length. Shaving the head will almost always show the punctate scars. There’s an extreme photo example shown at this page to give you an idea of scarring from a large FUE session.

Why Isn’t Finasteride Considered a “Temporary Cure”?

Just wanted to know, if finasteride supposedly regrows or maintains hair for men. Why isn’t it considered a temporary cure for hairloss?

Is this just a question about the nomenclature? A “cure” is defined as a complete or permanent solution, which means it wouldn’t be temporary.

If you take a medication to control your blood pressure, that wouldn’t be called a “temporary cure” for high blood pressure — and the same goes for a hair loss treatment like Propecia (finasteride 1mg). It is not a cure, but it does help reverse the thinning (initially), slow down the hair loss, or maintain what you have.

Hyperthyroid and Hair Loss

Thank you Doctor for a great blog and for taking my question. I am a healthy 44yo male and have been shedding hair for almost 9 months now. I have seen a GP, a Derm. and a Endo. doctor who all found my thyroid to be slightly hyper. ( 3.4 , range 0.40-4.50) My derm. said I do not have MPB and diagnosed me with global telogen effluvium and feels my thyroid MAY be causing my hair loss. My DHT level is 29 (range 25-75). The GP and Endo. state that my thyroid is only a little hyper and that is not the reason for my hair loss and will not treat me for it.

My question Doctor is can a slightly hyperthyroid cause hair loss and is that loss permanent? Also, is there anything I can do for it aside from avoiding caffine, soy and shellfish. Thank you very much for your time.

Thyroid issues can lead to hair loss, and it can be permanent, particularly if you’re genetically inclined to lose hair anyway. Of course I would have to see you to determine if you have hair loss with miniaturization present in a pattern that reflects the genetic process.

There is also a genetic test to determine if you are carrying the gene for hair loss which, if negative, would rule out that as a cause. If your genetic test is positive and the miniaturization testing shows a pattern of hair loss, then drugs like finasteride (Propecia) should work and is something that is worth considering assuming that you have a doctor willing to abide by my plan. Why wouldn’t everyone just choose FUT instead of FUE?

FUT is cheaper and has better yield. Why does everyone care about the scar when you have hair? If you want the option to shave your head why get a transplant? Ok surgery recovery time is a small factor…
FUE and FUT are equal quality today. That may not have been true years ago, but today the tools are so good that FUE in the right hands produces quality grafts. The advantage of FUE over FUT is (1) less pain, (2) no linear scar, (3) full activity after within 5 days with no limitations. FUT advantages (1) no shave of the back of the head, (2) long hair covers the donor area so you can go to work the next day as long as the doctor doesn’t shave the recipient area, (3) better for advanced balding patterns as large graft removal never produces a see-through donor area if it is done understanding the limitation of the donor supply.

There is no such things as a little hair transplant. A hair transplant requires local anesthesia which can be the beginning of a cascade of hair loss in a 25-year-old not on finasteride. Will Dermatitis Treatment Harm My Hair Growth 2 Months After My Transplant?

About 2.5 months post op from my tranplant (4,000 grafts) I developed a case of Seborrheic Dermatitis. Medicated shampoos were not working so my dermatologist prescribed a desonide/ciclopirox cream (mild steroid/anti-fungal) to be applied 2x per day. Will a cream block my pores and stunt my transplant growth?

Since it’s already over 2 months since your hair transplant, I wouldn’t be concerned. You should play it safe and talk with your surgeon about this.
