Hair Transplant Review at New Hair Institute of Norwood 4 Patient Before / After Photos

This is a review of a hair transplant surgery performed at New Hair Institute by Dr. Jae Pak.

This is a young 30 year old professional who lost his hair in his 20s. He had a 2100 graft hair transplant surgery that gave him a non-balding “frame” to his face. He will continue to lose his hair on top and may need future surgeries but the transplanted hair in the front in permanent and he now looks his age and feels better about his new look!

Similar results to the TV Reality show Jon Gosselin’s results in terms of number of grafts received and the balding pattern. Both patients did not have follow up surgery for their crown area (for their own reasons).

Using neck hair for FUE

Would you extract hair outside the safe zone, right at the lowest point of the nap if the patient said he knew it may not last but wanted a more even looking donor area, post-extraction?

I would argue with the patient in his favor, explaining two elements of using neck hair, (1) neck hair is not permanent and (2) the area scars worse than other parts of the scalp and without hair, the scars will show.

Hair Transplants and Scar Tissue

I have some questions about hair transplant in skin with extensive scarring. I’ve tried looking for information on this online, but the vast majority of the information available is on transplantation into normal skin, and any information on scarring is generally limited to scarring as a result of the procedure itself. This seemed like a good place to ask.

A friend of mine was in a fire about 11 years ago and has had extensive skin grafts and reconstructive surgery. One of these procedures was an attempt to stretch the areas of his scalp that still grew hair to cover the areas that did not. However, the skin proved to be too thin to completely cover the hairless areas, and he was left with 2 areas of scalp with no or very sparse hair, each about 2″x3″. While he is comfortable with the grafts on his body, I know the hairless patches on his head really bother him. He has jokingly mentioned getting hair plugs in the past, but he doesn’t think his hair is thick enough to provide donor sites, and I think he worries that transplanting into thin or scarred skin would be impossible.

So, basically, my questions are, can living hair be transplanted into large areas of scar tissue? Can hair follicles be harvested without causing other noticeable thin spots, or can it be donated from another person with similarly textured and colored hair?

Thank you!

Yes, hair can be implanted into scar tissue to provide a cosmetic benefit. We have done that on many occasions, but the status of the skin is critical in making the determination to go forward. Skin grafts, for example, with no thickness to them may not be able to tolerate hair grafts. Your friend’s issues are not unique and there are patients who have had hair transplant surgery to cover the bald areas from such tragedy. We have done many with neurosurgery scars and face lifts scars that easily support hair grafting, but each and every patient is very unique and can pose challenges.

I really cannot answer your question without seeing the patient in person or at least seeing a photograph. If your friend is considering options, I would have them make an appointment with a good hair transplant surgeon to discuss those options. (Also, “hair plugs” is a term used for the outdated procedures done in decades past. Current techniques can create an undetectable result without a pluggy look.)

Using the Sides of the Head as Donor Hair?

Greetings,
Solid good data base you have built on this blog Dr. rassman. Thank you

My question is: Can you transplant hair from the upper sides of the head “left and right” about 3 inches above the ears, or is it only possible as a donor area to be from the lower back above the nick ? Reason I’m asking this question is because I have what i want to define as “Global hair loss/damage”. Meaning even in the donor area it’s clearly visible that i do not have a normal hair distribution/density “there is holes among the donor area” but, in my sides “just below the flat crown of my head” the hair is extremely healthy/dense/thick and can grow for long time with out being damaged.

Your time and answers are greatly appreciated

NW7First I though you were describing diffuse unpatterned alopecia (DUPA), but if there are clearly areas of your scalp that are full and lush, and they are about 3 inches above the ear, I would rule out DUPA on first glance. I would have to examine you to understand what you are telling me.

As a rule, however, the donor fringe is only 2 1/2 inches high on the back of your head and about 3 inches high on the side above the ear. Donor hair implies that the hair is permanent when full balding (up to a Class 7) occurs. Note the diagram at right of a Class 7 figure and you will see the 3 inches high fringe above the ear. Donor hair taken above the 3 inch level will not be permanent hair for the advanced balding patient.

Haircheck for Hair Bulk Analysis

One of the things I enjoy about the annual ISHRS meeting is that I am introduced to new products. Sometimes the products can be half-baked or without merit, but every now and then something catches my eye and piques my interest. So at the recent ISHRS meeting in Boston, I was shown a refined instrument called Haircheck that was presented to measure hair bulk… and I was quite impressed.

Over the past 18 years, I have assessed the thinning process with video magnification using a patented device where I could see the hair shafts, visually compare them and measure the density of the donor hair. Now with this Haircheck device, I can actually measure the bulk of the hair in the impacted areas and compare it not only to the permanent hair, but also to previous measurements made during past visits.

When you undergo balding, one thing always occurs — the impacted hair loses its bulk (the hair shaft diameter becomes thinner and thinner over time). Eventually this thinning leads to balding. The use of drugs like finasteride seems to reduce the miniaturization (thinning) process, and if there is a positive impact on hair bulk by blocking DHT, it will clearly show up in these studies. For those patients who continuously ask about saw palmetto or other supposed hair loss treatments, the value could clearly be defined with this technology.

I fully recommend to every person that believes they’re losing hair to get a Haircheck examination in an office near them. I’m not sure which other clinics offer it, but we will be offering this service to our patients who believe that their hair is thinning. Very High Level of Tin in Hair Samples

I had a hair analysis due to thinning hair. I am a 57 female who is menopausal. My report indicated a very, very high level of tin in my hair samples. Good, bad or not related to hair loss? Thank you.

There is no clear relationship between tin levels and hair loss to my knowledge. I would want to know why your tin levels are high and have a doctor find out if it is impacting any organ system in your body. High tin levels could be toxic.

I had my hairline lowered with a advancement procedure and I got terrible scarring (photo)

The scarring you have may be the result of a surgical wound that was closed too tight which is known to form scars like you have. This area can be transplanted filling in the hairline with a forward new hairline created with fine single hair grafts in front and this will hide the scar when done properly. Similar work can be done behind it. Here are some examples of hair transplants performed for female lowering procedures which does apply to you: https://newhair.com/female-hairline-lowering/), scalp micropigmentation can hide the scars inside your hairline easily (https://scalpmicropigmentation.com/scar-covering/#!).

Hairline transplanted too low

I had a hair transplant and the hairline I was given is too low. The doctor said he would FUE out the hairline grafts.

Putting a hairline too low is a real bad problem. Just trying to do FUE to the grafts in the hairline does not work well. The laser hair removal systems can kill the grafts but leave you with marks in the frontal hairline. Best to send me photos and let me see the extent of the problem.
